    Humidistats

Humidistats are small electronic device used to measure and control the humidity within a room or enclosed environment. Humidistats work in a similar way to thermostats but control humidity rather than temperature. They are typically connected to humidification, dehumidification, ventilation, air conditioning and extraction systems.

    What is humidity?

Humidity is the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere. It is normally measured as a percentage. In an environment with 100% humidity, the air would be completely saturated with water vapour.

What is the difference between a hygrometer and a humidistat?

A hygrometer is a basic device used to measure and provide a reading on the humidity level. Hygrostats can provide measurements but unlike humidistats, do not give you the option to change the humidity level within the environment.

    How does it work?

Humidistats contain a sensing element that comprises of a flat plate with two metal conductors. They measure the electrical resistance between the conductors and relay to an amplifier. The amplifier can turn a humidifier on or off until the optimum level of moisture in the air is detected.

Why is it important to monitor and control humidity?

The humidity level, whether at home or at work, has an impact on your health and environment. Humidity is directly affected by seasonality and weather conditions. In warmer months, the humidity level is naturally higher. Some people can find higher humidity levels uncomfortable. Higher humidity environments are prone to condensation, damp and the growth of bacteria. In colder months, the air is naturally less humid. Extended periods of time in lower humidity environments can make you more susceptible to respiratory illnesses and colds. If the humidity in your environment is too low, it can also cause damage. For example, wooden furniture may crack, and paint can chip.

What should I set the humidity level at?

There is no perfect humidity setting, this is governed by personal preference and comfort. It is recommended to set the humidity level somewhere between 35% and 45%
